Bisphenol Values in Smit Products

Smit has analysed its core-range on bisphenols. We will communicate openly our bisphenols values in our products to the industry, so our partners can make the responsible choice.

For the long run, we are looking into bio-based alternatives to replace petrochemical key ingredients in our retanning products (see ESG report) in which we will continue to fulfill the lowest requirements of Bisphenol content in leather possible.

The products and presented values will be updated by new information provided in the course of time. Please note that these values relate to the retanning agent. Studies have shown that not all bisphenols will be taken-up by the leather and will partially end up in the waste-water. The uptake of bisphenols by the leather if depending on the substrate used, leather article recipe and process parameters.

If a product is not listed or if you’re interested in the uptake of bisphenols by your leather, please contact your sales representative or use our contact form.

Why focus on Bisphenols?

Since the restriction proposal on bisphenols and the addition of Bisphenol-S to the California Proposition 65-list, we have received numerous requests from the leather industry about bisphenols and the relation to leather chemicals.

For more information we kindly refer you to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) paper  in which explain the basics for a better understanding on bisphenols, focusing on the leather industry.
