A dual reality at ACLE 2025: Innovation in focus, industry under pressure

At this year’s All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE), Royal Smit & Zoon stepped into the spotlight. Not by exhibiting in a traditional booth among competitors, but by positioning ourselves closer to the future: alongside leather manufacturers and the fair’s trend area.

This wasn’t a matter of convenience: it was a deliberate choice. We came not only to showcase Zeology, our patented chrome-free tanning solution, but also to demonstrate its potential across finished consumer products: shoes, bags, and even automotive interiors. It was a continuation of last year’s 100% Zeology focus. A reaffirmation of our commitment to circular chemistry, responsible design, and performance without compromise. To reinventing leather, essentially.

And it worked. Our stand drew attention. Visitors were surprised (not to mention impressed) to learn that Royal Smit & Zoon doesn’t just deliver tanning, retanning, and finishing solutions; we enable tangible, market-ready applications. Our message was clear: Zeology leather is ready for every end-use, from runway to roadway.

Yet despite this momentum, ACLE 2025 also echoed with a deeper uncertainty. Conversations with peers and customers were tinged with frustration. From the misconceptions plaguing leather, to the origin debates tied to livestock, and the chilling effect of global geopolitical instability. These undercurrents created a bittersweet contrast: innovation on display, but progress on pause.

This tension is exactly why we continue to show up, to lead, and to challenge. As a 204-year-old family business with a Platinum EcoVadis rating and a mission to create a sustainable leather value chain, we are not immune to the storm. But we are firmly anchored in purpose.
