Tannery of the Future

Tannery of the Future was set up as a sustainability checklist for leather manufacturers in 2015, with Smit & Zoon being one of the founding partners of the Tannery of the Future Foundation. The tool was extensively downloaded and used through hardcopies by stakeholders from all over the leather industry who wanted to learn about sustainable leather manufacturing. In 2019, the foundation merged with the Leather Working Group and is now a self-evaluation assessment with extensive supporting material. This supporting material will allow leather manufacturers to develop an understanding of their environmental profile and to consider what developments may be required before starting to address the more challenging and detailed requirements of the LWG Environmental Audit. Smit & Zoon is still active as a Co-Chair in this subgroup from the Leather Working Group.
