Internship: R&D Analytical Chemistry
From our awareness about the importance of a responsible leather industry around the world, Smit & Zoon is continuously searching for sustainable solutions for the entire leather value chain. In the leather industry, R&D plays a crucial role in this search through developing chemistry into products suitable for leather processing. At Smit & Zoon R&D, we believe that we have a social responsibility to offer a good learn & work environment for trainees. Furthermore, we target to have traineeships designed such that these are not only beneficial for the individual trainee, but also for Smit & Zoon. We are currently looking for students with an interest for:
Internship: R&D Analytical Chemistry
Starting January 2021
The R&D department consists of 15 chemists/chemical engineers, which are all involved either in product development, process development or analytical support, and the trainee is anticipated to be fulfilling the internship as a full member of the Analytical support sub-team. The trainee is expected to work primarily from the R&D laboratory located on the Smit & Zoon production site in Amersfoort.
The R&D department has opportunities for trainees to participate in several of the ongoing projects.
In this Internship your assignment would be:
- In-depth investigation towards the benefit of Differential Scanning Calorimetry for wet-end performance products to be used in the leather industry.
Knowledge of structure-property relationships is crucial for new wet-end product development. The objective of the trainee project is to study a particular analytical method in relation to its applicability for specific wet-end products. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is a thermo-analytical technique in which the difference between the amount of heat required to increase (or decrease) the temperature of a sample and reference is measured as a function of temperature or time. DSC can be used to measure a number of characteristic properties of a sample, e.g. using this technique it is possible to observe melting and crystallization events. Objective of the trainee project is to investigate the thermal properties of wet-end products and to determine correlation between typical wet-end product properties and thermal behavior.
