Smit & zoon was founded in 1821 by Albert Smit, Captain of the ship "De Koornzaaijer". Originally the company traded in dried codfish, salted herring and medicinal cod liver-oil. The following years the company expanded its activities by trading in animal oils, vegetable oils and proteins. Smit & zoon developed into a company producing chemicals for the leather industry and in addition thereto, a company specialized in functional oils for the food, feed and pharmaceutical industry.
Smit & zoon's recent history
On October 31st 2017, Smit & zoon acquired Italian leather chemicals producer Codyeco. Because of this acquisition, both companies can expect their customers to benefit from a broader portfolio, joint strengths in regards to product innovations and a strong focus on making the leather value chain more sustainable.
Per January 1st 2018, we sold our division of Functional Oils to IQI B.V., a supplier of pet food ingredients such as fish meal and fish oil.
Marc Smit, the 7th generation owner of Smit & zoon, is currently heading the company, together with Hans van Haarst, CEO. Marc Smit took over this role from his father in 2006.
